Spelling with Structure: Unit 2 continues the journey from foundational spelling patterns into true morphology instruction by teaching students how prefixes, suffixes, and inflectional endings affect both meaning and spelling. Grounded in structured literacy and Orton-Gillingham principles, this resource helps students understand that words are made up of parts that work together to create meaning.

After building a strong foundation with syllable types and spelling rules in Unit 1, students are now ready to apply those same skills while exploring how words change when prefixes and suffixes are added. Throughout the unit, students continue applying the Three Great Rules while learning how word structure supports spelling, reading, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Rather than memorizing weekly word lists, students learn to analyze words, recognize meaningful patterns, and understand how morphemes contribute to both spelling and meaning.

This resource is intentionally designed for upper elementary students (3rd, 4th and 5th grade) and is not intended to function as a stand-alone phonics program. Instead, it serves as a structured word study program that integrates spelling, morphology, vocabulary, and word analysis into one cohesive system. Students learn not only how words are spelled, but why words are spelled the way they are.

For reference, I am a 3rd grade teacher and developed this curriculum for my 3rd grade class. With that in mind, it can still be used in 4th and 5th grade classrooms.
