Meaningful Practice with Spelling Rules, Prefixes, and Suffixes

These Spelling & Morphology Word Searches are designed to go beyond “busy work” and provide intentional, rule-based practice with spelling patterns and morphemes. Perfect for upper-elementary students (3rd grade specifically), each puzzle reinforces orthographic spelling rules while helping students analyze how words are built. These are more than just your average morphology worksheets!

Unlike traditional word searches that simply ask students to hunt for words, these puzzles require students to apply spelling rules, recognize prefixes, suffixes, and bases, and notice patterns that transfer directly into reading and writing. Students will first spell & write the word with the indicated affix added and then search for the word in the word search.

This set focuses on AFFIXES and will have spelling rules that need to be applied. (Three Great Rules: 1-1-1 Doubling, Drop E, and Change Y to I Rules are all prerequisites necessary for students to successfully complete the word searches included in this resource.)

Students will be provided with a base word, a prefix and/or a suffix and will have to apply spelling rules in order to create a new word. Then they can search for the newly created word! 14 puzzles are included. Answer keys are also included for easy grading.
