Morphology Reading Passages for Small Groups, Centers & Independent Practice
Are you looking for high-quality morphology passages that help students decode, understand, and apply Greek and Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes—without adding extra prep to your plate?
This morphology passage set is designed specifically for 3rd grade students and is perfect for small group instruction, literacy centers, intervention, or independent work. Each passage explicitly focuses on word parts (roots and affixes)while reinforcing reading comprehension and vocabulary development.
This resource would also be great for advanced 2nd grade or intervention in 4th grade.
✨ What’s Included:
- 10 original morphology reading passages (two leveled versions -- Level A and Level B, for differentiation --> 20 passages total)
- Comprehension and word study questions that reinforce morphemic analysis
- Teacher-friendly print format for whole group, small group, or independent center use
- Cross-curricular connections to 3rd grade science and social studies standards
- Student-friendly comprehension questions
Two levels (A and B) are included for each passage. A for slightly below/on-level, at DRA 28-30 (Lexile 520 - 660) and B for slightly above/on-level at DRA 34-28 (Lexile 670 - 810). These levels fall right in the typical 3rd grade band, which according to national benchmarks is roughly DRA 28–38 or Lexile 500–820L.
Each passage is intentionally written to support structured literacy, making it ideal for teachers using morphology-based instruction, science of reading practices, or small group differentiation.
Topics in Set 2 include Community, Map Skills, Force & Motion, Historical Documents, Citizenship, Ecosystems and Weather. The following titles and focus morphemes are included:
- Rewriting Our Maps (graph + re-)
- Detracting Forces in Motion (tract + de-)
- Predicting the Weather (dict- + pre-)
- Improving Our Communities (struct + in-, il-, im-, ir-)
- Misinformation in History (form + mis-)
- Construction in Our Community (struct + -ion)
- Portable Goods & Trade (port + -able/-ible)
- Empowered Citizens (cred + en-, em-)
- Nonliving vs. Living Things (bio + non-)
- Overheated Earth (bio + over-)
❤️ Why I LOVE this resource:
✔️ Explicit yet discovery-based approach aligned with Orton-Gillingham and the Science of Reading methodology
✔️ Integrates morphology with core content for deeper vocabulary retention
✔️ Promotes multisensory learning through reading, discussion, and morpheme mapping
✔️ Encourages students to act as word detectives, analyzing meaning within context
✔️ Perfect for structured literacy routines, morphology notebooks, and small group instruction. Predictable format allows for year-long use without reteaching!
Perfect For:
- Small group reading instruction
- Literacy centers
- Morphology & word study
- Independent work
- RTI / intervention
- Early finishers
- Spiral review of Greek & Latin roots
You will love using these passages as a plug-and-play morphology routine that builds stronger readers, spellers, and word detectives. This is especially helpful for teachers that do not have time to add another routine to their day. You can teach this format to your students ONCE and use these passages for the rest of the school year for literacy centers or stations!
These passages are designed to be used as introductions to new morphemes. Students may not have formally learned the specific prefix, suffix, or Latin/Greek base featured in each passage yet. As long as they understand what a prefix, suffix, or base is, they can successfully complete these activities independently. Exposing students to unfamiliar morphemes ahead of instruction helps build background knowledge and makes future whole-class lessons feel familiar and accessible.
